Henry set to stay
Written by Sawyer | 8th May 2006 | 0 Comment(s)
As Thierry Henry nears a decision on his own future, the striker may like to peer of the fence to see if the grass is always actually greener than the side he is on at present.
Patrick Vieira left Arsenal to have a better chance of winning the Champions League, but not only did The Gunners end his team's hopes and are now heading for Paris; Vieira's new team is now caught up in yet further controversy
that could even end with Juventus incurring serious sanctions.
Vieira's own personnel form hasn't exactly been great, but considering the recent crisis at Juve that now seems quite an insignificant point.
The sanctity of the safe environment at Arsenal that Vieira used to enjoy couldn't be any further from Juventus, where the entire board of the Italian powerhouse resigned on Thursday following phone taps involving members.
In recent days, reports have surfaced that telephone conversations involving top Juventus and Italian league officials were intercepted, and now several high-profile figures in the Italian game are facing an Italian investigation.
One board member, Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi, was overheard in a conversation with a member of the Italian Football Federation about the selection of referees for league games.
Some are calling for Juve to be relegated following this particular revelation.
As soon as the conversations became public knowledge, both the president and vice president of the Italian Football Federation handed in their resignations while Moggi and Juventus chief executive Antonio Giraudo are both facing
investigations.
The scandal has brought the entire Serie A into question in terms of business practices, as it is reported that several top-flight sides across the country as facing similar probes.
Italian football has always appeared to be run in a strange way. At the start of this season the teams that would compete in Serie ‘A' were only decided a few days before the start, due to complexities involving finances and match
fixing.
The allegations will probably end up involving other top clubs like AC Milan and Lazio who were relegated in 1980 for match fixing, which may explain why Andrei Shevchenko has said he is looking to leave Milan.
Following the recent problems regarding Tottenham requesting a replay of their West Ham fixture, we should be quite glad that in England that that is all we have to worry about in comparison to the Italians.
As for Henry, sometimes it is better the devil you know. Vieira is probably too proud to admit it, but he probably wishes he could have stayed.
It would appear that Arsenal's Champions League opponents would be favourites to lure the Frenchman, but with the goings-on concerning the Real Madrid presidency being the latest controversy in Spanish football whose to say that
everything would work out for Henry in Catalonia, with Spain being a country where two or three defeats often sees a change of manager.
Henry has recently admitted that he ‘feels at home in London', and this coupled with his interview following the Wigan match where he stated that, ‘We have not qualified for the Champions League yet. We need to play the qualifying
game before we are in it' will give Arsenal fans plenty of optimism that he will lead the club into the new stadium.
Undoubtedly a decision will be made within the next few weeks, probably after next Wednesday, but how many of us has split with a quality girlfriend (which in football terms Arsenal is) only to be disappointed by the next one?
Mind you, Patrick did go for an ‘Old Lady'!!
