Tottenham target heading for Arsenal?

Written by Sawyer | 12th July 2006 | 0 Comment(s)

Argentina international Javier Saviola is almost certain to join Arsenal, according to the striker's agent.

"He will make his decision based on football and that points to the Gunners. He will have no problem playing in England because he is a world-class player and will be successful in any country," Saviola's agent Alfredo Cabrera Brizuela told reporters.

Since signing for €25-million in 2001, the River Plate product has been unable to break into the rotation at Barcelona and has spent the last two seasons on loan: initially at Monaco and then Sevilla.

Before he arrived at Sevilla there was much speculation concerning a possible transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, which began to look increasingly likely when it became obvious Freddie Kanoute would be leaving the North London club.

However, eventually Saviola chose to play once again in La Liga funnily enough teaming up with Kanoute at Sevilla.

He was Sevilla's leading scorer last season with 14 goals in 31 matches and helped the club lift the UEFA Cup; their first trophy since 1948.

Saviola's agent added: "This week is very important because he wants to have a holiday knowing he has his future sorted out."

Saviola's style of play would alley itself to a typical Arsene Wenger signing, as of course would his age.

With Dennis Bergkamp now retired the Argentine could be seen as a replacement in that he is a player who can certainly create, but some Arsenal fans may question the role that Robin van Persie would be left with.

However, nothing is signed and sealed yet and of course agents do tend to say a lot of things especially following the ‘shop window' of a World Cup.

The 24-year-old Saviola has been capped 34 times by Argentina, scoring 10 goals.

He figured in three matches at Germany 2006, scoring one goal, assisting on two others and was named the Man of Match in the Group C match against Ivory Coast.

Arsenal set for striker change.
Saturday’s instalment of the Arsenal/Liverpool trilogy provided some cause for many to think that all was not well in the Arsenal camp as Nicklas Bendtner headed home, only to then celebrate alone with the fans as the rest of the players shunned their customary group frivolities at scoring. This summer could see Arsene Wenger shuffle his striking options?

Liverpool & Everton - Run-in Predictions
The fight for points and places at either end of the table will take much of the attention and once again we also have the added issue of Merseyside supremacy for the 4th Champions League spot, which could prove just as intriguing as the other battles.
