The Crisis Pendulam
Written by Kj talk | 10th January 2006 | 0 Comment(s)
In football it’s one of the Medias favourite words and swings around like a pendulum on an old clock until it stops upon a team, a manager or player for a “crisis analysis” profile from a self appointed panel of experts.
This will come from an exited tabloid press or the very populist radio phone in’s that specialise in hysteria and mob sentiment. This season for even a brief while Chelsea were laughably heading for a crisis after three successive defeats over a series of separate competitions before the spotlight fell at the Manchester United door and the management of Sir Alex Ferguson was being called into question.
Once that so called crisis was quelled after a few steadying results so the search light roamed for a new club to come into focus and under the scrutiny of a critical press and the hysterical phone in jock. Step forward Arsenal who due to poor form in the Premiership and by their own high standards it was being suggested that this giant was heading for the rocks like the Titanic and all on board were about to bale out.
What a crushing disappointment then it must have been then to all the circling vultures to read yesterday that one of Europe’s top players in Thierry Henry and club captain actually wants to stay at the club where he has become a record goal scorer and continue to play his football in a new state of the art stadium that will be the envy of Europe! This is also a real coup for the Premiership and for football supporters as a collective in the fact that a player of real world class renown has rebuffed the opportunity of foreign pastures and pledged his talent to remain on the British Isles.
It also should be noted and applauded that the player has repaid the faith in his manager and club who showed belief in him whilst he was struggling in another county before Highbury swooped and brought him to North London. It is an almighty gesture to Arsenal football club from probably the clubs best ever player in the love and belief Henry has for the club particularly after the strange and confusing departure of Patrick Vieira to Juventus.
I read his reasons and fully agreed with his sentiments when he stated it is now up the clubs board to match his belief in the manager and club with world class acquisitions and build a team to match Chelsea and challenge in Europe. How sad also were the hysterical press and in particular a ginger baying Hyena who cackles down the airwaves that yesterdays FA cup ties produced no real shocks and in the replays I would back the Middlesboro’s and Birmingham’s to come through into the next round without too many problems. Over the Christmas period it had to be noted that Chelsea’s incredible consistency must surely have won them a second successive league title and in Joe Cole he must have become the Premierships most improved player and has shown real “bottle” in working his way back into the first team ranks after a time where it was suggested he was on his way out of the club.
The result that caught me eye over Christmas occurred in the Championship with Reading’s away win at fellow promotion hopefuls Wolverhampton. In my last article I called into question whether Reading could hold their form together in the second half of the season and it seems as if Steve Coppell’s men might soon be bringing the Royals to Anfield, Old Trafford, and St James Park and err the Emirates stadium. (Ashburton Grove) err the new Arsenal ground! With the form and character they have shown thus far I hope they make it.
Another club that comes under the easy umbrella of crisis seems to be Newcastle United and I was really pleased that one of England’s and Europe’s top players yesterday becomes the clubs equal record goal scorer, step forward Alan Shearer. Here is a player that any supporter would have wanted to be in their team at one point of time, power is the first thing that springs to mind when mentioning Shearer and an ability to start his own move’s from either flank and be at the kill in the centre when it comes to putting away his finishing opportunities.
He has been a supreme professional for both club and country and also should have won a stream more honours that his talent richly deserved. It will always be sighted that Shearer should have joined Manchester United when they were in their pomp before he signed for his home town club from Blackburn for a then a record fee of £15 million pounds. Kevin Keegan was in charge and to most of the football world at the time it seemed as if Newcastle was on the brink of Premiership glory.
Sadly for the Geordie hordes they just fell short have been searching for the holey grail ever since. The one thing that all Geordies will tell you is the fact that since Alan Shearer has been at the club he has never let them down and to be the clubs record goal scorer is perhaps the best honour of them all as it may never be broken? Let’s see what the fourth round draw brings, maybe big Al will have the magpie’s at last crowing with delight in May
