Arsenal secure provisional place

Written by Sawyer | 6th April 2006 | 1 Comment(s)

Milan's victory over Lyon has confirmed that Arsenal will be among the No.1 seeds in next season's European Champions League draw; assuming the Gunners are in the competition.

A victory and a draw in the Semi-Final with Villarreal would see Arsene Wenger's team, not only qualify for the Paris Final, but also move ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United in Uefa's rankings.

The first table shows the standings following the Champions League quarter-finals.

However, many will believe that Arsenal and Barcelona will be the two teams meeting for that Paris date, and this season's Uefa co-efficient scores would bear out the bookies feelings.

Arsenal actually has an identical record compared with Barcelona, but Spain's superior standing in Europe means that the Catalans are slightly above the English side.

If you are confused take it up with Uefa: it's their points system.

Liverpool, Tottenham + Chelsea stars highlight difficulties
Former stars from Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea took part in a rather interesting discussion on Wednesday evening prior to the Manchester United/Roma clash which will have only highlighted some problems when it comes to improving the standard of refereeing.

Arsenal set for striker change.
Saturday’s instalment of the Arsenal/Liverpool trilogy provided some cause for many to think that all was not well in the Arsenal camp as Nicklas Bendtner headed home, only to then celebrate alone with the fans as the rest of the players shunned their customary group frivolities at scoring. This summer could see Arsene Wenger shuffle his striking options?

Several players from Ajax and PSV Eindhoven will undoubtedly come under the microscope of the scouts when the top two clash this week with Klaas Jan Huntelaar clearly the most talked about.

Liverpool & Everton - Run-in Predictions
The fight for points and places at either end of the table will take much of the attention and once again we also have the added issue of Merseyside supremacy for the 4th Champions League spot, which could prove just as intriguing as the other battles.
