McClaren has a confident Jimmy

Written by Sawyer | 5th April 2006 | 0 Comment(s)

Middlesbrough striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is confident that the English Premiership side can overcome a two goal deficit on Thursday night and advance to the semifinals of the UEFA Cup.

Boro trail Swiss Super League leaders Basle 2-0.

‘Score three goals, concede none,’ was Hasselbaink's verdict when asked what Middlesbrough had to accomplish.

‘Obviously, it's not going to be as easy as I have said, but that's what we have to do, and we have to give it our best shot.’

‘Yes, it is a big mountain to climb, but anything is possible in football, and you have to believe. That's the most important thing.’

He continued, ‘The reason why we believe is that for the first 40 minutes over there we were in control and creating chances.’

‘We then had a bad five minutes in which they scored two goals, and in the second half it was a bit more open.’

Boro’s task could have been so different, as the Dutch striker said, ‘We needed a goal of our own to make this second leg easier, and we were unlucky not to get one.’

‘It was just one of those nights when we could not score. Hopefully that will change.’

‘Everybody is certainly up for it. We feel we can definitely score against them and that we can overturn the deficit.’

‘We have to be cautious we don't concede. That's the biggest danger, but hopefully we can make some history.’

Elimination would be rather frustrating for Steve McClaren’s side as it did appear the draw had provided a reasonable path to the Final.

Their aspirations will not have been helped by the news that Spanish midfielder Gaizka Mendieta will miss the remainder of the season with a broken foot.

Nevertheless, Basle is not exactly Barcelona and it is not beyond the realms of possibility the Boro could do it: even a 2-0 will be sufficient and let’s hope McClaren has his squad practicing their penalties.

Arsenal set for striker change.
Saturday’s instalment of the Arsenal/Liverpool trilogy provided some cause for many to think that all was not well in the Arsenal camp as Nicklas Bendtner headed home, only to then celebrate alone with the fans as the rest of the players shunned their customary group frivolities at scoring. This summer could see Arsene Wenger shuffle his striking options?

Liverpool & Everton - Run-in Predictions
The fight for points and places at either end of the table will take much of the attention and once again we also have the added issue of Merseyside supremacy for the 4th Champions League spot, which could prove just as intriguing as the other battles.
