Liverpool, Tottenham + Chelsea stars highlight difficulties

Written by Patrick | 10th April 2008 | 0 Comment(s)

Former stars from Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea took part in a rather interesting discussion on Wednesday evening prior to the Manchester United/Roma clash which will have only highlighted some problems when it comes to improving the standard of refereeing.

The subject was the Liverpool/Arsenal clash on Tuesday night and of course it wasn't long until the issue of the winning penalty was on the agenda.

Former Kop favourite Graeme Souness felt that the award was correct and that Liverpool deserved to win the tie for their ability to dig deep and find an answer to the problems Arsenal caused them.

On the other hand former Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle, who you would have thought will be happy with Arsenal losing, was convinced the penalty should not have been awarded and that Arsenal was the better side over the two legs.

Hoddle may have not played for Arsenal, but his close friendship with Arsene Wenger was more than likely behind his comments.

Former Chelsea and Man United player Ray Wilkins had no affiliation to either Arsenal or Liverpool, and sensibly he suggested that the penalty should not have been given.

So two to one in favour of Arsenal on the penalty verdict, but as for ex-players going on to become referees this particular discussion only served to highlight the fact that there is more than likely to be a little bias involved if they had the whistle in their mouths when taking charge of a former team, or maybe one managed by a former colleague or friend.

The referees these days may make many mistakes and the penalty decision at Anfield, coupled with the one that Arsenal should have been given at The Emirates, are certainly two of them, but with players happy to go down at the merest touch it is always going to be difficult.

As time moves on and Arsenal get over their disappointment events at Anfield will eventually pale into the distant past, but would that be the case had Mr Souness been the referee who gave the decision?

Arsenal set for striker change.
Saturday’s instalment of the Arsenal/Liverpool trilogy provided some cause for many to think that all was not well in the Arsenal camp as Nicklas Bendtner headed home, only to then celebrate alone with the fans as the rest of the players shunned their customary group frivolities at scoring. This summer could see Arsene Wenger shuffle his striking options?

Arsenal, Chelsea + Spurs all eye striker.
Several players from Ajax and PSV Eindhoven will undoubtedly come under the microscope of the scouts when the top two clash this week with Klaas Jan Huntelaar clearly the most talked about.

Birmingham, Fulham + Sunderland given boost.
Strugglers Fulham, Birmingham and Sunderland were given something of a boost with the news that Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen will miss the rest of the season with a back problem.

Liverpool & Everton - Run-in Predictions
The fight for points and places at either end of the table will take much of the attention and once again we also have the added issue of Merseyside supremacy for the 4th Champions League spot, which could prove just as intriguing as the other battles.
