Hold The Fire Sale

Written by Kj talk | 20th July 2006 | 0 Comment(s)

Whilst the press have been speculating on the arrival into the Premiership of some of Italy's top players, it seems a slight dampening is occurring upon the flames. Two highly rated talents in Juventus pair Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson has joined fellow Italian Fabio Capelo at Real Madrid.

And perhaps the biggest disappointment of all is the intention of goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to stay in Italy and indeed with Juventus and play football next season in Seri B. That has to be noted as a great show of loyalty by the player to his club and I might add that I in fact made Fabio Cannavaro the player of the world cup rather than Zidane.

As Milan were not punished with such severity and remain in the Italian top flight it is highly likely that their players will also elect to stay in Italy. And I note with a little suspicion that the appeals for the four affected teams take place on Saturday and it will be interesting to see if the severe penalties the Italian FA imposed are up held.

So as the fans of the biggest clubs in the Premiership check the internet and papers to see who is linked with their clubs, at present it has been slow trading. Arsenal and even Manchester United will no longer get the best goalkeeper in the world and the talk at the moment is more about who will be leaving rather than who arrives.

At Real Madrid the new president Ramon Calderon plays to the gallery with some bullish sound bites and mentions that Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas is wanted along with perhaps the clubs leading irritant Ashley Cole. After the revelations come into the public domain in Cole's soon to be published auto biography it seems impossible that the player will stay.

If I were Wenger I would get shot of him for as much money as possible. Yes he is a good player and at the right age but he is fast becoming a prat! He is not as good as previous Gunner great Kenny Sansom and does not have the charisma of say former England left back Stewart Pearce. How he can accuse the club of "hanging him out to dry" after being caught bang to rights talking to Chelsea is beyond me.

You do not criticize your employers in public when you still have a two year contract to run and let's remember the player willingly signed an extension to his contract after the Colegate affair. I will be amazed if he still carries the respect of the fans, the most important people of all.

Whilst it seems likely that Van Nistlerooy will be leaving Manchester I suspect that England tormentor Ronaldo will be staying and after a couple of good games and a celebration shared with Rooney all the excitement during the world cup will soon be forgotten.

Liverpool will need to sign a top class striker that guarantees them twenty five goals a season and have been linked with Feynoord's Dirk Kuyt. And whilst his goal return in Holland is impressive I would have strong doubts as to him being the answer to the Liverpool front line.

The most interesting area of speculation regarding transfers seem to be taking place not at the top of the Premiership but with a club that finished fourth from bottom last season, Portsmouth.

With the return of footballs number one wheeler dealer Harry Redknapp the club survived relegation and now has cash a boost following the take over from Milan Mandaric by Russian millionaire Alexandre Gaydamak. The clubs it appears are in for a number of high quality players covering all positions. And with the ground ready to be redeveloped it seems the Pompy chimes will soon be heard at the higher end of the league.

Sol Campbell has been linked along with a lone deal for Chelsea's Glen Johnson and at present the club are in talks with French striker Nicolas Anelka. And it seems the club are prepared to pay a record transfer fee of ten million pounds to Benfica for their midfield player Manuel Fernandes.

The Premiership needs a wild card to spice up something new so let's hope its Portsmouth unless of course you follow Southampton!

Liverpool, Tottenham + Chelsea stars highlight difficulties
Former stars from Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea took part in a rather interesting discussion on Wednesday evening prior to the Manchester United/Roma clash which will have only highlighted some problems when it comes to improving the standard of refereeing.

Arsenal set for striker change.
Saturday’s instalment of the Arsenal/Liverpool trilogy provided some cause for many to think that all was not well in the Arsenal camp as Nicklas Bendtner headed home, only to then celebrate alone with the fans as the rest of the players shunned their customary group frivolities at scoring. This summer could see Arsene Wenger shuffle his striking options?

Arsenal, Chelsea + Spurs all eye striker.
Several players from Ajax and PSV Eindhoven will undoubtedly come under the microscope of the scouts when the top two clash this week with Klaas Jan Huntelaar clearly the most talked about.

Liverpool & Everton - Run-in Predictions
The fight for points and places at either end of the table will take much of the attention and once again we also have the added issue of Merseyside supremacy for the 4th Champions League spot, which could prove just as intriguing as the other battles.
