Liverpool, Newcastle and Spurs target miscalculated

Written by JR Walker | 21st July 2006 | 7 Comment(s)

Clubs interested in prying Holland international away from Feyenoord must improve their bids, the striker's agent warned.

Liverpool is said to be leading the race to sign the 25-year-old Kuyt, but Newcastle United, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with him.

Nevertheless, no club has matched Feyenoord's £13.7 million valuation, Kuyt's agent Rob Jansen said.

''Dirk will not be signing for Liverpool any time soon,'' Jansen told AD Sportwereld.

"He is also not negotiating with any other English club for that matter.''

He continued, ''Clubs do not want to pay what Feyenoord wants.''

''If foreign clubs don't have the money to buy Kuyt then he will stay with Feyenoord, it's that simple.''

Jansen admittedly doesn't fix the price, but if that is what Feyenoord really do want then it will not be surprising if Kuyt does remain in Holland.

The striker chose to stay in his native land last season in order to secure a place in Marco van Basten's World Cup squad when he could have moved in the ‘January Window', but when he arrived at the tournament his talents were probably not shown in the best light.

Initially he was a late substitute in games that Holland were winning, before starting in the final match against Argentina when qualification was already assured and neither team went at exactly full tilt.

Ruud van Nistelrooy's poor form, and run-in with van Basten, saw Kuyt selected for the ill-fated encounter with Portugal where the ball seemed superfluous to requirements on many occasions to put it politely.

Kuyt managed 25 goals in 37 appearances for Feyenoord last season, but was overshadowed by Klaas Jan Huntelaar who struck 39 goals in 44 League and European appearances for Heerenveen and then Ajax following his transfer to Amsterdam in January.

Newcastle would seem to be the neediest club at present, but it could be that some of the other clubs may wait to see if Huntelaar can repeat his heroics this season.

Should he do so, and of course Ajax will listen to offers, then Kuyt may find he has missed the Premiership boat unless Feyenoord can be swayed on their valuation.

Feyenoord of course will be reluctant to sell after allowing another free-scoring player, Salomon Kalou, to join Chelsea for £3.5 million, but quite how they calculate Kuyt's asking price will be beyond most.

8 million !! from what I saw in the WC he's probably worth about 4m, I reckon someone should take a punt on huntelaar - could probably get him for 3 million

kyut is a great player.but i think his club just wanna make as much money as possible after realising they sold one of their best player to chelsea for less than 4mil. kyut will remain there for the next season, unless they revalue him. i tink he's worth 6.5mil max !

True. Kalou was important and very good for Feyenoord too, but they sold him for less than 4m. And Kuyt failed in the summer's WC. Nobody would pay 13m for him now. The problem is that too many clubs get greedy in such situations.

true.. he's definitely not worth 13million quid plus.. dream on feyernoord.. you can keep kuyt.. for 13M, a club could buy both crespo and saviola!

Kuyt is ok, but he's overrated. He's an 8 million pound player at the most.

Liverpool, Tottenham + Chelsea stars highlight difficulties
Former stars from Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea took part in a rather interesting discussion on Wednesday evening prior to the Manchester United/Roma clash which will have only highlighted some problems when it comes to improving the standard of refereeing.

Arsenal set for striker change.
Saturday’s instalment of the Arsenal/Liverpool trilogy provided some cause for many to think that all was not well in the Arsenal camp as Nicklas Bendtner headed home, only to then celebrate alone with the fans as the rest of the players shunned their customary group frivolities at scoring. This summer could see Arsene Wenger shuffle his striking options?

Liverpool & Everton - Run-in Predictions
The fight for points and places at either end of the table will take much of the attention and once again we also have the added issue of Merseyside supremacy for the 4th Champions League spot, which could prove just as intriguing as the other battles.
