After being hailed as one of the great young talents at this summer's World Cup, Ecuador midfielder Luis Valencia agreed to join Premiership side Wigan Athletic on a loan deal.
Valencia, 21, is under contract with Villarreal but will play all season at the JJB Stadium after spending the 2005/06 season guiding Recreativo Huelva to promotion in Spain.
The right-sided midfielder appeared in all four of Ecuador's matches at the World Cup and was among the leading vote-getters by fans for the Young Player Award, which eventually went to Lukas Podolski.
Latics manager Paul Jewell told the club's official website, "As with most South Americans, he has skill in abundance and combines it with electric pace and a very high work-rate.
"He has played in Europe for a season, and I'm convinced he has the attributes to make a success of the Premiership."
Valencia becomes Jewell's seventh summer signing after Tomasz Cywka, Fitz Hall, Emile Heskey, Chris Kirkland - also a loan deal, Denny Landzaat
