Arsenal and Chelsea stars lose out to Pole

Written by Sawyer | 10th August 2006 | 0 Comment(s)

German international and Werder Bremen striker Miroslav Klose has been voted German player of the year by the country's leading football journalists.

Klose came first in the Kicker magazine poll with 532 votes, well ahead of Arsenal ‘keeper Jens Lehmann and his 82 votes.

''Miro (Klose) was the best the Bundesliga had to offer. His effort, his personality are outstanding,'' Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said of his main marksman.

Polish-born Klose scored 24 goals in 26 Bundesliga matches last season, the Bundesliga's top scorer, and has 39 strikes altogether since joining Bremen in 2004.

He also added five goals for Germany at World Cup to collect the Golden Boot at the tournament.

Against Sweden in the first knock-out round he demonstrated his ability to make goals as well as score them, creating both of Lukas Podolski's brace that took Germany through.

Klose was allegedly being looked at by Arsenal earlier in the summer and his performances over the last few seasons could easily attract Liverpool and Manchester United who are both in the market for an additional striker.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's transfer to Inter Milan and Luca Toni's eventual stand of loyalty towards Fiorentina amongst others is slowly lessening the choices for those that may require further striking options.

Dirk Kuyt, David Trezeguet and Carlos Tevez remain the subject of much speculation, but Klose would also fit very nicely amongst that company.

Bayern Munich left-back Phillip Lahm finished third in the voting, and his Bayern team-mate Oliver Kahn finished fourth.

Lahm had been linked with a move to Chelsea during the summer; a transfer which may still happen depending on the outcome of the Ashley Cole saga.

What was quite surprising was the manner in which Chelsea newcomer and former Bayern Munich talisman Michael Ballack was overlooked by so many of the media and finished only fifth with 17 votes.

Arsenal set for striker change.
Saturday’s instalment of the Arsenal/Liverpool trilogy provided some cause for many to think that all was not well in the Arsenal camp as Nicklas Bendtner headed home, only to then celebrate alone with the fans as the rest of the players shunned their customary group frivolities at scoring. This summer could see Arsene Wenger shuffle his striking options?

Liverpool & Everton - Run-in Predictions
The fight for points and places at either end of the table will take much of the attention and once again we also have the added issue of Merseyside supremacy for the 4th Champions League spot, which could prove just as intriguing as the other battles.
