Tottenham star for England?

Many Spurs fans will be quietly pleased with their opening to this season’s Premiership campaign. Of course there will be just as many that have seen it all before and will be wary of the annual de-railing before Christmas; but this time may be different.
Some will point to the Carling Cup debacle at Grimsby, but as long as football is being played there are always likely to be shock results. Wrexham and York are among Arsenal’s past conquerors, Bournemouth once accounted for Man United and only last season Burnley dumped Liverpool out of the FA Cup; and we all know how their season finished up.
The next few seasons may see an upturn in the fortunes of the Lilywhites, especially if the talents of Aaron Lennon are to reach their potential. His recent performances for the England U-21 team and of course Spurs will have made Martin Jol an extremely pleased manager.
At the U-21 level, Lennon certainly looks very capable, and the first touch he displays, allied with his speed and vision for a pass give him a more than real possibility of breaking in to the senior squad within the next couple of seasons.
At that time, you would probably imagine that David Beckham may have vacated the role on the right, probably to Shaun Wright-Phillips, but it may be that the £21m Chelsea man will be seriously challenged for that spot by the Tottenham youngster.
Manager Martin Jol has already likened his play to that of Arjen Robben, and should he be correct with this assessment of Lennon’s talent it may be sooner rather than later when he progresses to the senior national squad. We can see why Jol would make this
comparison, as Lennon is very direct when running at defences, but also appears equally comfortable when coming inside.
However the season does pan out for Spurs, their fans may well be witnessing the birth of a very special talent. Of course, it is not necessarily the case that playing in the U-21’s naturally means that players’ progress to the full squad, but for Aaron Lennon this
just may be the beginning of a very fruitful career.
At the culmination of the season, many at Tottenham will not be too surprised should Lennon be nominated for the Young Player of the Year Award, and if he is then that will surely be a pointer to Spurs qualifying for Europe.
