Man United targets heading for London

Written by JR Walker | 20th August 2006 | 2 Comment(s)

Argentina coach Alfio Basile has unveiled his squad for the friendly match with Brazil, which is to be played in London at Arsenal's new Emirates Stadium on September 3rd.

Other than Boca Juniors defender Hugo Ibarra, Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano of Corinthians and Cesar Delgado of Cruz Azul, all players are active in European leagues.

Tevez and Mascherano have been the subjects of recent speculation as their club sits at the foot of the Brazilian standings with the Argentinean pair the butt of most fans' frustrations.

Manchester United and Chelsea have been amongst those linked with Tevez whilst Mascherano also has United as one of many admirers.

As usual it will be a question of who can afford what is likely to be a considerable wage demand from either player and of course there is not too long remaining for clubs to finalize any agreements.

It will probably be expected for both players to head for Italy or Spain, which is where many South American players seem to prefer to settle when making the move to Europe.

Following Sunday's opener against Fulham Sir Alex Ferguson has every right to feel his team answered those who doubted the qualities of his squad, but there is always room for improvement whether it be Owen Hargreaves, one or both of the Argentineans or a player that has remained out of the public domain at present.

Of course, this particular friendly international will be too late for managers to further run the rule over any would-be signings, but not totally beyond possibility that a player on show at The Emirates may have the interest of a new set of supporters upon him.

It will be expected that Juan Roman Riquelme and Maxi Rodriguez would play in midfield with Lionel Messi handed a wide role and although speculation regarding the former has petered out recently, they will be players worth watching whatever the importance of the match.

Alfio Basile's squad is as follows:-

Goalkeepers: Roberto Abbondanzieri, Leonardo Franco

Defenders: Hugo Ibarra, Pablo Zabaleta, Fabricio Fuentes, Fabricio Coloccini, Gabriel Milito, Walter Samuel, Clemente Rodriguez.

Midfielders: Maxi Rodriguez, Luis Gonzalez, Javier Mascherano, Leandro Somoza, Federico Insua, Daniel Bilos, Juan Roman Riquelme.

Forwards: Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Cesar Delgado.

Wasn't Tevez photographed in a United shirt last year?

Riquelme would have been a better but than Carrick. I agree that it is unlikely that either Argie will come to England, but United will always be an attraction to any player.

Arsenal set for striker change.
Saturday’s instalment of the Arsenal/Liverpool trilogy provided some cause for many to think that all was not well in the Arsenal camp as Nicklas Bendtner headed home, only to then celebrate alone with the fans as the rest of the players shunned their customary group frivolities at scoring. This summer could see Arsene Wenger shuffle his striking options?

Liverpool & Everton - Run-in Predictions
The fight for points and places at either end of the table will take much of the attention and once again we also have the added issue of Merseyside supremacy for the 4th Champions League spot, which could prove just as intriguing as the other battles.
