Tottenham: Defender seeks advice
Written by JR Walker | 22nd August 2006 | 2 Comment(s)
Czech defender Zdenek Grygera has denied rumours that he will be leaving Ajax in order to join Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur.
Even though Grygera is currently not willing to sign a new deal with the Dutch club and only has 12 months remaining on his current contract, he still does not see the London club as his ideal destination.
It was widely believed that the defender would leave Amsterdam for an unnamed Italian club (probably Juventus) this summer, but the match fixing scandal meant the deal could not be completed and the 26 year old remained with Ajax.
''If there is an interesting and specific offer from a club that has a good reputation in Europe, I would not be against it,'' said the former Sparta Prague player.
''I know nothing specific. Tottenham are a high-quality team but England would not be my first choice, although I am not saying no.''
He concluded, ‘'I have one year left on my contract and I am not willing to extend it so my future will be resolved next summer at the latest.''
Martin Jol is believed to be looking for a left-back, but could have seen Grygera as an ideal defensive squad member as he can play in all positions although he has primarily appeared as a centre-back for Ajax while also covering at right-back for Hatem Trabelsi, now of Manchester City, when he was either in contract dispute or injured.
Grygera is believed to have contacted Edgar Davids to find out more about life at Spurs, and also his former team-mate and former Tottenham forward Mido.
Roma is also believed to be interested in the Czech star, and it is quite possible that Mido's advice could have pointed Grygera back to the attentions of Italian football.
Meanwhile, Martin Jol will have been more concerned with Tottenham's first points of the season at home against Sheffield United tonight, and Robbie Keane's performance as a captain in the absence of Ledley King.
Dimitar Berbatov getting off the mark was another pleasing aspect as was the performance of England international Aaron Lennon.
The enigma remains Jermaine Jenas who continues to look good when Spurs go forward, and of course netted Spurs' second goal, but is sometimes found wanting when opponents have the ball.
A further, but less worrying enigma would appear to surround Finnish midfielder Teemu Tainio who seems to be a player that is a catalyst to Spurs rarely losing when he plays.
In a similar vain to Manchester United at the weekend, but not quite as devastating, Spurs killed the game off pretty early against Neil Warnock's side, which may well prove to find the Premiership a little beyond their capabilities.
A truer test should come in the form of an Everton side that finished last season a lot better than they started it, although Tottenham can boast an impressive recent record against the Toffees.
