Chelsea leap-frog contenders in star chase
Written by Sawyer | 10th May 2006 | 0 Comment(s)
Alleged Chelsea and Tottenham target Salomon Kalou has had his appeal for Dutch citizenship declined once again, leaving him unable to join the Dutch squad for this summer's World Cup.
With 20 league goals in the Eredivisie this season, Salomon Kalou would be an asset to any International squad, and after 3 years at Feyenoord he is keen to commit himself to the Dutch national team.
However an administrative court in Amsterdam last week turned down his appeal for a fast track Dutch passport.
The judge believed there were ‘no special grounds' to grant citizenship to Kalou.
The player's request for fast track citizenship had already been turned down by immigration minister Rita Verdonk.
Having already turned down his country of birth, the Ivory Coast, Kalou's last hope is to pass a mandatory Dutch citizenship test, which he has already failed once, in November 2005.
The first chance Kalou would have to undertake the test would have been this week and he would be required to take another part some weeks later.
Strangely enough, if the twenty year old had become a member of the Dutch squad he could have faced his brother Bonaventure Kalou, who plays for the Ivory Coast, as they are in the same World Cup group as the Netherlands.
Tottenham has been monitoring the situation and had they qualified for next season's Champions League they may well have tried to persuade Kalou that his future may lay away from Holland, especially after Feyenoord was trounced
7-2 on aggregate by Ajax in the Dutch Champions League play-offs.
Of course Tottenham still has the Uefa Cup to look forward to and a move for Kalou can still not be ruled out, although recent reports suggest that Chelsea has now stepped up their interest.
Kalou may well consider any subsequent offer from Stamford Bridge, but he is also likely to take into account his regular first-team place at Feyenoord and the fact that Shaun Wright-Phillips has struggled for anything like
regular football since his move from Manchester City.
Should Kalou once again fail his Dutch Cultural Exam, and it certainly isn't easy, he may be left with some important decisions to make during the summer.
