Arsenal, Man United and Real Madrid target ready for move

Written by JR Walker | 28th August 2006 | 4 Comment(s)

The absence of David Trezeguet from the Juventus line-up that took on Napoli in the Coppa Italia has started rumours of supposed link-ups with Manchester United, Arsenal and Real Madrid.

The French international is one of the few remaining stars in Turin after a summer of high-profile exits from the Bianconeri, and reports suggest he could be on his way to The Premiership for £17 million.

Trezeguet has been associated with various moves in Europe this summer, but Juventus will be hoping to keep the player with only days to go before the closure of the summer transfer window.

Sir Alex Ferguson may still be looking to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy and is a manager who never shies away when top forwards become available.

It is a long while now since Trezeguet knocked United out of the Champions League while playing for Monaco and he was generally overlooked by Raymond Domenech during France's World Cup campaign.

However, he has usually been amongst the top scorers in Serie A; supposedly one of the most difficult Leagues for strikers to operate.

He has often been linked with a move to Arsenal down the years, but a move to the Gunners will probably depend on whether Arsene Wenger receives a suitable offer for Jose Antonio Reyes.

The Arsenal boss may consider that he would still have enough options of width in his squad and in all honesty Trezeguet would probably prove a more potent goal threat than Emmanuel Adebayor.

Against the move would be Trezeguet's wage demands and the worry that he and Thierry Henry haven't exactly formed the deadliest of partnerships when playing for France, although there is no logical reason why this is as both players would appear well suited to one another.

Wenger has always been a manager that prefers to create stars rather than buy them, but he has stated his admiration for Trezeguet on more than one occasion.

With former boss Fabio Capello now at Real Madrid it isn't surprising that some of the Italian press are making this particular link.

With Ronaldo seemingly on his way out of the Bernabeu there would be a place open for Capello to bring in his former forward.

Napoli ended Juventus' hopes of progressing to the last sixteen of the Italian Cup when they beat them in a penalty shoot out.

The match was played in front of a crowd of 55 000 at the San Paolo Stadium ending in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Juventus took the lead in the 27th minute when Giorgio Chiellini headed in Balzaretti's cross.

However, Napoli hit back with goals from Cristian Bucchi and Emanuele Calaio to delight the passionate and partisan home crowd.

Juve coach Didier Deschamps brought on Alessandro Del Piero in an effort to get back into the match. The veteran Italian international curled in an equaliser off the post.

Del Piero put Juve ahead with just two minutes of extra-time left when he tucked home Balzaretti's cross, but Paolo Cannavaro, younger brother of Italy's FIFA World Cup-winning captain Fabio, levelled the score for Napoli sixty seconds later with a spectacular overhead kick.

Federico Balzaretti missed the all-important spot-kick which saw Juventus bow out of the competition, and see their one chance of qualifying for next season's Uefa Cup disappear.

The two teams were title rivals in the 1986/7 season when Diego Maradona led Napoli to their first Serie A title, at the expense of Michel Platini's Juventus by three points.

But the two Italian giants are now residing in Serie B following Napoli's promotion from the third division last season and Juve's demotion from Serie A for rigging matches.

Napoli's next match in the competition will be against Parma in the last sixteen.

I hope to make a bid of around £17.5 million before the transfer window closes. Maybe even slightly more, i hope it would be succesfull!

It would be really great if Trez did come to Arsenal coz im an Arsenal fan and think that we need one more quality striker to make a difference this season. If he did then we could let Jose Reyes go, but it's just a possibility

Arsenal set for striker change.
Saturday’s instalment of the Arsenal/Liverpool trilogy provided some cause for many to think that all was not well in the Arsenal camp as Nicklas Bendtner headed home, only to then celebrate alone with the fans as the rest of the players shunned their customary group frivolities at scoring. This summer could see Arsene Wenger shuffle his striking options?

Liverpool & Everton - Run-in Predictions
The fight for points and places at either end of the table will take much of the attention and once again we also have the added issue of Merseyside supremacy for the 4th Champions League spot, which could prove just as intriguing as the other battles.
